Brooklyn Traditional Slow Jam

This acoustic instrumental meet-up focuses on tunes in the Irish, English, New England Old Time, French Canadian, American Southern, and Scandinavian traditions. Tunes are those that are typically suitable for contra dancing or other traditional fiddle tunes.

This group is intended to provide a musical home for folks interested in playing tunes with other musicians, learning to play by ear and overall increasing their own musical skill. It’s fun and welcoming to all ages and levels of playing. While there won’t be playing from sheet music, guests can certainly use this as a reference on their own.

Award-winning Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall leads the annual NYC Tartan Day parade as Grand Marshal, the first woman to lead the Parade. The parade starts at 2pm at 45th Street and marches up Sixth Avenue to 55th Street.

Pro tip: if too much marching takes a toll on little legs, head to Bryant Park around 11am for a pre-parade Pipes and Drums performance.

A new opera for babies uses parachutes to create an intimate world of wonder and interaction. 9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk & Community Day

The seventh annual 9/11 Memorial & Museum 5K Run/Walk and Community Day includes all-ages entertainment (food trucks, music, and kids’ activities). It’s free and open to the public.

The 5K begins in lower Manhattan and takes participants through scenic Battery Park City with iconic views of One World Trade and the Statue of Liberty. The 5K Run/Walk finishes adjacent to the Memorial Plaza where Community Day takes place, with family activities until 2pm.

In April 2009, the U.S. Congress designated September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Now, every April, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum 5K Run/Walk and Community Day seeks to honor and affirm that spirit.
