A New Year brings new events, activities, and programs to your family’s calendar! With a variety of events taking place in the tristate area, there is sure to be something for everyone.
January 1st to January 6th:
Holiday in the Park: Tuesday, January 1st, is the last day to visit Six Flags to enjoy a magical winter wonderland at the park. Featuring cirque-style acrobats, life-size photo opportunities with ornaments and costume characters, as well as a holiday feast, don’t miss your last chance to enjoy the holiday magic. All Aboard with Thomas & Friends: Encourage your child’s green thumb by taking a trip to the New York Botanical Garden to watch Thomas’ Budding Adventure. During the mini-performance, young participants will learn the steps to growing a beautiful garden. Performances run select weekends in January, and the Garden is located at 2900 Southern Boulevard, Bronx. Visiting members that are at the Garden for Thomas & Friends should reserve tickets to the Members Holiday Breakfast.
First Sunday at Brooklyn Botanic Garden: For those unable to commute to the Bronx, visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Sunday, January 6th, to enjoy Family Story Time, a Nature Walk and Winter Tour, and an all-levels yoga class. The Garden has entrances on 455 Flatbush Avenue or 990 Washington Avenue, 11225.
Angelina Ballerina Holiday: Sunday, January 6th, is your last opportunity to enjoy a festive musical performance featuring Angelina Ballerina and her friends. This uplifting production is sure to delight members of the entire family. The show will take place at McGinn/Cazale Theater, located at 2162 Broadway, 4th Fl., in Manhattan.
January 7th to January 13th:
Color Sorting: At Lil’ Chameleon, toddlers can engage in a sensory-friendly activity to learn more about colors and using teamwork and socialization, build their own rainbow together. In addition, the activity helps young children strengthen their fine motor development. The workshop takes place on Tuesday, January 8th, and is located at 29 Elm Street, Tuckahoe, New York.
Keeping Wildlife Wild: Visitors to the Wave Hill House can enjoy a presentation from the experts at Hudson Highlands Nature Museum on wildlife, ecosystems, and wild animals. The informative and interactive nature program takes place on Saturday, January 12th, at Wave Hill House, located at West 249th Street and Independence Avenue in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
Disney on Ice: Frozen: By this point in time, it is likely that many parents have watched and listened to Frozen on repeat. To bring the magic to life for your children, visit the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, to watch Frozen and Friends on ice. Performances take place from Thursday, January 10th, to Sunday, January 13th, and the venue is located at 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, 11553.
Winter Family Programs at the Queens Botanical Garden: On select Saturdays in January and February, families can visit Queens Botanical Garden and hone their green thumb. Interactive, educational workshops include a focus on plant life, bugs and other nature-related forms. The Garden is located at 43-50 Main Street in Flushing.
Mozart for Munchkins in LIC!: On Sunday, January 13th, families can visit Book Culture in Long Island City to enjoy an informal but first-rate program featuring music from Bach to Beethoven. The four-hour event takes place at 26-09 Jackson Ave., Long Island City.
January 14th to January 20th:
Go Home Tiny Monster: Go Home Tiny Monster is a heartwarming family-friendly tale about the spirit of helping each other in times of need. Featuring puppets, live music and a poignant tale, children of all ages are sure to enjoy this story. The performance takes place on Saturday, January 19th, at Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre, located at 2537 Broadway on the Upper West Side.
The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes: In this fascinating exhibition on Sherlock Holmes’ London, visitors will learn more about the Holmes methods and how they were used to solve mysterious crimes. The program takes place at the Liberty Science Center, located inside Liberty State Park at 222 Jersey City Boulevard, Jersey City.
Backyard Wilderness: In today’s hectic day and age, it is important to take a few minutes to disconnect from the digital world, and Backyard Wilderness helps remind families about to do just that. The nature-themed film is playing at the American Museum of Natural History, located at Central Park West at 79th Street on the Upper West Side.
January 21st to January 27th:
The Greatest Show: If your school-age child is interested in breaking into show business, why not enroll them into this one-of-a-kind musical theatre class and jumpstart their dreams? The ten classes begin on Saturday, January 26th, at The Center at West Park, located at 165 West 86th Street on the Upper West Side.
Winter Jam at Central Park: Featuring activities like skiing and sledding on fresh snow in the heart of Manhattan, Winter Jam is a way to enjoy these sports activities without leaving the city. The program takes place on Saturday, January 26th, at Central Park, Manhattan Bandshell Area, with the entrance on West 72nd Street.
The Music of Grateful Dead for Kids: On Saturday, January 26th, visit Brooklyn Bowl for an early afternoon of music and bowling. All ages are welcome to the event, located at 61 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg.
Stripes stART for Children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Children’s Museum of Arts is running an inclusive program for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and their family and friends. Participants can focus on strengthening their motor skills, self-regulated independence, and other movement exercises. The program takes place on Saturday, January 26th, and the museum is located at 103 Charlton Street in Manhattan.
January 28th to January 31st:
Tummy Time at Kidville Hoboken: Tummy Club is perfect for infants up to the age of 6-months who are just learning to practice their motor skills and visual and sensory processing skills. The program takes place on Mondays at Kidville, 1202 Shipyard Lane, Hoboken, New Jersey.
Shrek Jr.: Watch the beloved film come to life on the big stage! Families will recognize familiar faces such as Shrek and Donkey as they try to rescue Princess Fiona so Shrek can keep his swamp out of Lord Farquaad’s hands. The performance takes place on Tuesday, January 29th and takes place at Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center, located at 99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank, New Jersey.
Date Night at Gymboree Play and Music: Looking forward to date night but missing a sitter? Visit Gymboree Play and Music of Park Slope on Wednesday, January 30th for their drop-off program. Parents will have two hours to themselves while knowing that their children will be enjoy access to special projects and arts and crafted themed activities with a slew of teachers. New Year’s Celebration: Oshogatsu: On Sunday, January 28th, celebrate New Year Japanese-style at Japan Society, located at 333 East 47th Street.
