With warmer weather on the horizon, there are plenty of fun and engaging outdoor activities and programs to enjoy. The family-friendly events below encourage children to stay active, as well as prepare for spring holidays such as Easter and Passover.
March 1st to March 8th:
Holi Hooray!: Holi, or the Color Festival as it’s commonly known, originated in India. On Saturday, March 3rd, families can learn more about what makes up this well-known holiday at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. During the all-day celebration, parents and children will learn about the Holi story, enjoy Bollywood dance lessons, and feast at the Food Bazaar. The museum is located at 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, and pre-registration is required in order to participate in the day’s events.
Popsicle Stick Tower Challenge: On Saturday mornings, the Skyscraper Museum hosts an immersive program designed to allow children to learn more about architecture, engineering, and the skyscrapers of New York. On March 3rd, the theme is Popsicle Stick Tower Challenge, where children who are five years old and older will construct their own skyscraper using popsicle sticks, tape, and glue to discover who can build the tallest, yet most durable structure. The Skyscraper Museum is located at 39 Battery Place, in downtown Manhattan.
The Orchid Show: The 16th annual Orchid Show takes place from Saturday, March 3rd until Sunday, April 22nd at the New York Botanical Gardens, located at 2900 Southern Boulevard in the Bronx. The program features thousands of orchids, creating a stunning display that celebrates some of the rarest flowers in the world. The exhibit is crafted by Daniel Ost, who has been referred to as “the Picasso of flower arranging.”
To the Moon and Back: During this interactive 3-hour program, children will start by constructing their own helmets and air tanks using recycled materials to help assist them on their “trip to the moon.” Additionally, participants will learn facts, sing songs, and read stories as means of preparation. At the end, children will discuss what they saw and learned, and craft their own 3D moon. The program will take place on Saturday, March 3rd at Giocare Playspot, located at 655 6th Avenue.
And the Award Goes to..: In anticipation of the Academy Awards this weekend, the Museum of the Moving Image will be hosting a screening of the Oscar-winning film Mary Poppins, face painting with Cheeky Chipmunk, and an award show-themed scavenger hunt. Festivities take place on Saturday, March 3rd, and the venue is located at 36-01 35, Astoria.
Atlantic for Kids: This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing is a play about three sisters that are left behind in a forest by their father, and are forced to find survival on their own. The last performance takes place on Sunday, March 4th at the Linda Gross Theater, located at 336 West 20th Street.
International Women’s Day: On Thursday, March 8th, come and celebrate International Women’s Day at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, located at 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn. The all-day festivities feature an exploration of women who fought and led the way for change, a reading of She Persisted by Chelsea Clinton, and craft activities.
March 9th to March 15th:
The Dragon King: On Saturday, March 10th, Tanglewood Marionettes is hosting an interactive workshop demonstrating how to build marionettes and manipulate their movements. It is recommended for children 8-years-old and up. The program will take place at Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Boulevard, Flushing.
Mammoth Follies: Using songs, dance, and humor, Mammoth Follies explores the age of dinosaurs. It takes place on Saturday, March 10th at Tribeca Performing Arts Center, located at 199 Chambers Street, New York.
Secrets of the Zoo: Migration Mystery: On Saturday, March 10th, families can participate in their own mystery adventure to learn more about this springtime animal. Using animal biofacts and field-science equipment, participants will engage in a scavenger hunt to discover its’ identity. Prospect Park Zoo is located at 450 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn. If you’re unable to make it to Prospect Park to participate in this program, visit the Central Park Zoo for a morning of Exploring the Wild: Grizzly Bears!
Meet the Music: On Sunday, March 11th, the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center is hosting a program about four very different friends and how they must learn to get along in harmony. The one-hour performance takes place at Alice Tully Hall, at 1941 Broadway, New York. Prior to showtime, there will be a musical instrument petting zoo in the lobby, so make sure to arrive early.
Bilingual Concert in Long Island: On Sunday, March 11th, take a trip to the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, at 38 Old Country Road, Garden City for a bilingual family jam with Latin Grammy duo 123 Andres. The performance will have the whole family active and engaged.
March 16th to March 22nd:
Brain Day: Designed to draw awareness to the progress and benefits of brain research, Brain Awareness Week takes place from March 12th to 18th. To promote neuroscience, brain-related exhibits, activities, and workshops will be on display at the New York Hall of Science on Friday, March 16th. The hall is located at 47-01 111th Street, Corona, New York.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade: The 2018 New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on Sunday, March 17th. The parade can be viewed along 5th Avenue between 44th and 79th Streets from 11:00am to 5:00pm. An additional parade will take place in Bay Ridge.
Spring Festival at the 14th Street Y: The 14th Street Y’s annual Pause/Play season wraps up on Saturday, March 17th with its Spring Carnival. At the four-hour event, visitors will enjoy balloon-making, face-painting, and have the chance to partake in various family fitness classes. The venue is located at 344 East 14th Street, at 14th Street and 1st Avenue, in New York.
Special Day for Special Kids: On Sunday, March 18th, the New York Transit Museum is opening its doors early so children with disabilities and their families can enjoy a quiet morning before it opens to the public. Interactive activities will be provided for children of all ages. The venue is located at the corner of Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn.
Family Cooking Classes: On Sunday, March 18th, Allergic to Salad is hosting a two-hour program designed to simplify planning and preparing meals for the whole family. During the class, instructors will teach how to prep 15-minute meals using a wide array of vegetables and pantry stables, meals that can be adjusted for a new dish on any night of the week. It will take place at Queens Botanical Garden, located at 43-50 Main Street, Flushing, and afterward, take a walk around the gardens if weather permits.
March 23rd to March 31st:
Hup: From Wednesday, March 21st to Sunday, March 25th, visit Lincoln Center for a performance of Starcatchers. Newborns through the age of two-years-old are free to explore during this classical music show, featuring a lovely quarter of musicians and an enchanting story. The Clark Studio Theatre is located at 165 West 65th Street, New York.
Opening Day at Luna Park: Luna Park will re-open on Saturday, March 24th and will remain open just about every day from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Luna Park is a popular tourist attraction, home to dozens of rides, numerous games, and eateries. The park is located at 1000 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn.
Aviator Sports Brunch with the Easter Bunny: Get into the Easter spirit early with Aviator Sports and Events Center’s Easter brunch on Sunday, March 25th. There will be a full brunch buffet, cupcake decorating, arts and crafts, and a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny. The sports complex is located at 3159 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, and the event is considered to be one of the most popular ones of the year. Additional Easter egg hunts are taking place at Alley Park, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and Queens County Farm Museum.
Macy’s Flower Show: The Macy’s Flower Show is back on display from Sunday, March 25th through Sunday, April 8th. This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Springtime,” and will be exhibited at storefronts in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.
Freedom Art Jam: On Sunday, March 25th, the Jewish Museum of New York is hosting their Passover extravaganza featuring art, music, and dancing. Children will get the opportunity to make their own holiday artifact, construct a freedom painting, and explore the galleries. The museum is located at 1109 5th Avenue at East 92nd Street. Additional Passover celebrations are taking place at Museum of Jewish Heritage and Kaufman Music Center.
